      Cons:

      1. Price: While it’s feature-packed, the Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) may come at a slightly higher price point compared to other Echo devices, but the added display and stereo speakers justify the cost.

In summary, the Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) is a top-tier smart display that offers a high-definition screen, stereo speakers, and the power of Alexa integration. It’s a valuable addition to your smart home, combining entertainment, communication, and home automation in one sleek device. While the price may be a bit higher than other Echo devices, the enhanced features make it well worth the investment. Highly recommended for those looking to level up their smart home experience.

Before ordering this one I already an echo show 8”, first gen. I was about to buy another one when I got an add saying that I could pre-order a second gen. I could not find a good comparison anywhere so I asked myself, should I pay 20$ more for an unknown. I did and spoiler alert, it is worth it, kinda.

      Positives:

      – The new camera features are great. The camera can track you and center you for video calls, real time, and it does it accurately.
      – Speaking of the camera, the camera upgrade is insane. Went from 1MP to 13MP.
      – The processor is supposed to be much more powerful. Looking at the new camera features, understanding where you are in a group of people and tracking you accordingly, it is noticeable. However, given that a lot of the actions on the device are web based, there is not a huge difference on other apps. The responsiveness of the touchscreen is perhaps a bit better but it was good to begin with.
      – The unit will go to low power mode when idle, helping you save a penny here and there…
      – Several privacy features. The stop listening button we have grown used to. The camera can be manually closed shut for privacy. When remote viewing through the show, there is a warning message, etc…

      Negatives:

      – Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. Just like with the Show 10”, the power cord is white for every unit, whether the unit is black or white. The camera shutter, is white too.
      – The 3.5 jack is gone.

      Other thoughts:

      The sound quality___

One of the items on my wish list for this one was an improved audio quality. The sound quality improved over the previous gen, I think, but I would say its marginal if that, not enough to even be sure it did.

      The white cord___

What I hate the most about my Echo Show 10 is the white cord on a black unit. Since I fell for it with the Show 10 and white would go well with my decor, I preemptively went for a white unit, to eliminate the eyesore, in case Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. To a certain extent, I was secretly hoping the cord would be black so I could swap it with my Show 10” and fix two problems with one move. Nope, its white.

Even with a warning from me that it could happen, a friend went for the charcoal one and he is still fuming. So, if you are like me that the white cord on a black unit would drive you crazy, and you are going for it, order the white one.

      The environment___

If you are still on the fence about this one, be aware that 2nd gen uses recycled materials on its manufacturing. To me this is a selling point.
      _____________________________
      TLDR,
      1) If you use it a lot for video calls, the improved camera and improved camera features, makes it a worthy upgrade. If this is not your cup of tea, waiting for a prime day sale on a previous gen might be better.
      2) If having a white cord on a black unit is something that would drive you crazy, get the white one or go for the previous gen.

Updated (JUNE2022): It appears that Amazon did learn from their mistakes. Another friend I warned about the cord, told me he didn’t really cared and went for the black one. Well, he got it with a black cord. Given that to me this was the worst negative, I just raised it one star.

We upgraded from a show 5 we have had about a year… And it is sooo much better. We can read the larger screen from across the room now and the kids do story activities on it and we can watch them (on the 5, it was just too small). The sound is a lot better too. Downside is the later software on this is confused and won’t be in the everywhere group… And there is no headphone jack… This would be perfect for integrating as an internet radio of there was just a good way to get the sound out. Also, just like the 5… You need the stand so you can always get the perfect angle to use it. We have yet to watch anything on it, but that would be possible. However a 10″ tablet on a stand is more portable/suitable… The show is just too stationary for that sort of use. Also, the camera has never been used except to play with by the kids a few times… I’m sure the video calling capability is neat, but my relatives can’t figure it out so we cant use it.

Smaller than the Echo Show 10 (screen size being the most significant difference) but it produces a quality screen for viewing YouTube, for instance. Responds well to a person’s voice, handing out instructions to Alexa. The sound quality for music is quite good. Not woofer speakers quality of course, but more than sufficient for listening to your favorite artists and songs. I’m not a totally tech savy person, so I can’t give you specific numbers on sound quality, but it serves my purposes well.

The setup is fairly smooth, although I did have a couple of glitches that occurred – such as when it was “updating” it stopped halfway through, and despite it telling me not to unplug it, I did and re-started and it finally when all the way thru the process on the 3rd attempt. I think everyone’s experience may differ, but it wasn’t overly difficult to get it up and running properly.

You can use the Alexa app on your phone or you can use the features right on the screen. There’s a drop-down menu of options, such as settings, alarms, brightness, etc. that are very easy to navigate. I would recommend experimenting a bit to find settings that agree to your liking.

There are tons of commands that you can use. You can make lists, such as Shopping List, Fun Things, etc. For instance just say “Alexa, create an Important Things to Do” list”. It will create it and ask you want you want on it. It will add items one by one, all just using your voice. You can delete a list that you want to get rid of. “Alexa, delete my Important Things to Do List”. Very easy to add or subtract items, such as “Alexa, delete Bread from my shopping list”. Those are just a few examples.

This unit does many many things. I don’t have lights or cameras set up in my home, so I don’t know how using Echo Show 8 does in handling that. But I can tell you every feature this product has works without too much learning or trouble. I would definately buy this product again.

    6. Videoguy916

The Amazon Echo Show 8 has been a delightful addition to my tech lineup, and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite devices. Here’s why:

      Pros:

Touchscreen Perks: The touchscreen is a game changer. Not only does it add a visual dimension to the Echo experience, but it’s incredibly user-friendly. Browsing recipes and following along while cooking has never been easier. This feature alone adds immense value.
Versatility: Beyond recipes, the screen offers a plethora of uses, from video calls to smart home controls. It’s genuinely transformed the way I interact with my smart devices.
Sturdy and Sleek Design: It’s got the classic Echo aesthetic, but feels fresh and modern with the screen.
      Cons:

Sound Quality: While the sound quality is more than satisfactory for everyday use, it might be a tad below the regular Echo. However, it’s a minor trade-off given the added functionalities of the screen.
In summary, the Echo Show 8 ticks almost all the boxes for a perfect smart device. The slight dip in sound quality is far outweighed by the convenience and versatility the screen brings. If you’re considering an upgrade or even a new Echo device, this one is definitely worth the investment.

The features and perks that come with any echo show or even the echo dots was bar none the best out there for home automation. Like what a security device, not long ago you could have your Echo Show or Echo Dot literally alert your phone anywhere you happened to be of a smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector going off or of glass breaking, or movement in your home, if this occurred you knew, what a feature and feeling of comfort, this was under the Alexa Guard and was free, they also had a paid version with even more perks, well there lies my disappointment, As of October, it’s no longer free, and the name changed to Alexa Emergency Assist and it cost you and more than the Old Alexa Guard paid version, I think this is wrong and if you are a Prime member paying those fees every month to be a Prime member then the Alexa Emergency Assist should be free, I understand that the extra perks costs Amazon money, but the old stuff free should have remained, the listening for Smoke and Carbon monoxide sounds and alerting you, that costs them nothing, it’s already built into the Echo dot or echo show you paid them for, when the device hears a certain pitch it alerts your phone, this takes no man power or extra cost to Amazon, this is just greed and nothing to do with inflation etc, just pure greed, is this device still a wonderful tool and aid, yes it is, but Amazon is actually chasing people away from it with all these extra fees here and there , it’s a sad situation because they had a wonderful thing, a device with simply your voice would give you news, weather, sports, set alarms and timers, give you reminders, any music by just asking, with the echo shows, it basically gives you a mini TV, yes and much more, I realize that some extra perks cost Amazon and a fee is only way, I understand free enterprise, but to take a huge perk that was actually encouraging people to buy, and cost Amazon nothing, it was paid for when the device was purchased and that wonderful fee all of us Amazon Prime members pay, and to put
additional costs to the customer is a huge huge disappointment and a red flag, I gave it 5 stars because the device itself is worthy of that , but the disappointment is in the greed and quite a Monopoly trick in my opinion, just one person’s opinion so probably means nothing, but at least going to call it out

I’ve been using my Echo Show 5 for many many years now as a bedside alarm clock/speaker/etc but semi recently I noticed that its started to struggle with executing requests quickly or correctly, sometimes even at all (though, to be fair, this is one of the very first Echo Show’s released. The thing has lasted a very long time) so I thought it was time for an upgrade.

So far, i’m very happy. The larger screen is more useful than I expected and makes it easier to use when leaning over in bed to adjust something, and the commands are executed faster than my Echo 5 did even when it was brand new, so I fully expect the Echo Show 8 to last.

If I had to lodge one complaint so far, its that the speaker isn’t much of an upgrade over the Echo Show 5. Don’t get me wrong, it is definitely better, but for the difference in time between my model and this one releasing, I would have expected a bit more a jump than I got. I usually listen to podcasts to sleep at night and it seems to need to be cranked up a bit higher than usual to hear what is being said.

All in all, I definitely recommend this if you’re upgrading from an older model. If you’re buying your first, I think it is still worth it but just keep in mind the speaker isn’t the most amazing thing in the world.

recently purchased the Echo Show 8 and I must say, it has been a game-changer in my daily routine. The features packed into this device have made my life easier and more enjoyable. From the moment I set it up, it has become a valuable addition to my home.

The 8″ HD touchscreen is simply stunning. The adaptive color technology ensures that everything displayed on the screen looks vibrant, regardless of the environment’s lighting conditions. Watching my favorite TV shows and movies in HD with stereo speakers has transformed my entertainment experience. Prime Video, Netflix, and other streaming services work seamlessly, providing me with endless hours of entertainment.

One of the standout features of the Echo Show 8 is the 13 MP camera with auto-framing. Making video calls has never been easier. Simply ask Alexa to call your contacts and the camera will frame and center automatically. This has made staying in touch with loved ones a breeze, and the high-quality camera ensures clear and sharp video calls every time.

In addition to its entertainment capabilities, the Echo Show 8 effortlessly manages various aspects of my daily life. From glancing at my calendars and reminders to getting daily recipe ideas with step-by-step instructions, this device has truly become my ultimate personal assistant. Setting timers, updating lists, and staying informed with news and traffic updates has become effortless with just my voice commands.

The Echo Show 8 also enhances my smart home experience. I can control compatible devices like cameras and lights using the interactive display, my voice, or even my motion. The built-in camera allows me to remotely look into my home when I’m away, providing added peace of mind.

One feature that has pleasantly surprised me is the Amazon Photos integration. Turning the home screen into a digital frame for my favorite photos has brought a personal touch to the device. The adaptive color technology ensures that my cherished memories look stunning, no matter the lighting conditions.

What really sets the Echo Show 8 apart is the commitment to privacy. With built-in multiple layers of privacy controls, including a mic/camera off button and a built-in camera shutter, I feel confident in its protection of my personal information. Amazon’s dedication to safeguarding user privacy is truly commendable.

In conclusion, the Echo Show 8 has revolutionized the way I enjoy entertainment, manage my daily life, and control my smart home. Its stunning display, impressive camera, and seamless connectivity have made a significant impact on my day-to-day routine. The personalized touch of Amazon Photos integration and the peace of mind offered by its privacy features are the cherries on top. If you’re looking for an immersive and versatile device, the Echo Show 8 is a must-have.

This thing can be just a tiny bit quirky at times, but in a way that’s cute. It changes your life, though. I bought a bunch of these so I’d have one in every room of the house. The ability to pay these over time is what really pushed me over the edge to get them (and get multiple). Amazon, please keep those payment plans happening; brilliant!

The original motivation to get these was because I take care of my mom who is handicapped and has trouble getting around. This thing for that purpose alone has changed her life (and mine). She can say from any room (even if she falls) “Alexa, announce…” and then it will send an announcement throughout the house so she can get my attention and help, even if it’s just to get a glass of water, a protein shake, a meal or just wants me to spend some time with her.

But this is way more than that. You can ask it to play your favorite music on Spotify. It can pull up your playlists instantly. You can link the devices together into various groups. So for example, I have a group I named “Central Stereo Group” that includes all my Echo Shows and Echo Dots throughout the house, with the exception of my mom’s bathroom and bedroom. So then I can say, “Alexa, play XYZ playlist on the Central Stereo Group” and it will instantly play my music in every room except hers. And it’s perfectly sync’d so there’s no “echo” issues. It’s like having a bunch of wireless speakers connected to the same stereo.

Recipes. Man, I tell ya. If I’m in the kitchen making something and am not sure what spices to use, or what techniques to try, I can just ask Alexa and instantly it walks me through recipes and shows them on the screen.

YouTube. If I wanna watch a recipe or literally anything on YouTube, I can just say, “Alexa, show a recipe for lasagna on YouTube” and it instantly pulls up YouTube so I can select which video I wanna watch, from the touchscreen.

Sometimes, I just like YouTube videos on in various rooms for ambiance. So like I’ll say, “Alexa, show a fireplace on YouTube” and instantly I can select a video with the touch screen, make it full screen, and suddenly my Echo Show is like a little fireplace. There are no words for how comforting this is for me, and especially for my mom who gets lonely and this makes her feel more at-home and takes the edge off her anxiety and pain.

Speaking of my mom, she can call for emergencies (this is an option you can set up for like $5 bucks a month and well worth it). If she falls or something, she can call out from any room since I have these in every room, and Amazon will respond and see if she needs 911 called or otherwise. She hasn’t had to use this feature yet, because she can just ask Alexa to call me or make an announcement. But this replaces LIFE CALL!!!

REMINDERS!! OMG. I use this every single day to remind me to do various things. For example, if I’m cooking I just use my voice to set a timer and it understands no matter how I phrase it. Example: “Alexa, remind me in 10 minutes to put the spaghetti in the pot.” And then it goes, “OK, I’ll remind you in 10 minutes.” Then in 10 minutes, it goes, “(ding dong) Here is your reminder: Put the spaghetti in the pot.”

SMART LIGHTS! If you have smart lights, you can just throw out commands to change your lights. This is seriously so life-changing. I now change the lights in every room of the house (I have Alexa-compatible smart bulbs throughout the house) with my voice. Examples: “Alexa, lights on.” “Alexa, lights off.” “Alexa, change the lights to red/cyan/fuchsia/purple/blue/orange, etc.” INSTANTLY does it. “Alexa, change the lights to 10%” and suddenly you get nice dim lighting. Ugh, so cool, so useful and so life-changing.

ROUTINES. I set routines with this thing to do various things. Example: I set it up to turn off the front and back porch lights at sunrise, and now it does!! I used to always forget to turn the porch lights off and now I save electricity and don’t have that problem anymore.

WEATHER, TIME, SEARCHES, etc. You can ask this thing ANYTHING. Ask it the current temperature outside, hourly forecast, 7 day forecast, you name it. If you have a question about something you would normally Google, just do it with your voice.

Caveat: Amazon is getting better with search but Google still works better. I purchased these because I got them on payments and the sound quality is fantastic. Plus, more devices are compatible with Alexa than with Google Assistant. The one downside, in spite of all these benefits, is that Google is WAY better at accurate search results. But Alexa is definitely getting better with time, so stay tuned!!

Excellent quality construction, the screen is bright, clear and beautiful. Sound quality is fantastic, even has some decent bass for a unit that’s not huge. Would buy these again and again.

These are definitely the electronic device that’s changed my life more than anything I’ve ever owned. And it’s changed my mom’s life and improved her quality of life.

MUST BUY FOR LITERALLY EVERYONE, IN MY OPINION!!! I could go on and on!!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS PRODUCT.

The only reason I couldn’t give it 5 stars is because there are times when it gets quirky, and the search functionality could be improved to compete with that of Google. Among other features that would make this a total 5 star product (e.g. better functionality with YouTube, Spotify and Web Browsing options).
